Mastering on a small budget: what is actually worth doing yourself

If the budget is small, the most important work happens before mastering. A master cannot repair every mix problem. It can only finish what is already there.

Check the balance, vocal level, bass control, harshness, clicks, and unwanted noise before sending the track anywhere. If the mix is not ready, mastering will mostly reveal the problems louder.

Compare your song to a few relevant releases, but level-match them. If the reference is louder, it will almost always feel better. Listen for tone, low end, vocal position, and overall density instead of only loudness.

Pushing limiters during the mix can make decisions harder. Leave enough headroom and keep the mix clean. Loudness can be handled at the mastering stage if the mix supports it.

You can prepare clean exports, check the song on different systems, remove technical problems, and send clear references. That is often more valuable than trying to imitate mastering with a plugin chain you do not fully trust.

When money is limited, spend effort on clarity. A clean, balanced mix gives any mastering option a better chance.
